Book Review: The Master Algorithm

This review is for Pedro Domingos’, The Master Algorithm.

3.5/5 Alright

This book was good.  The beginning was a lot of high level examples of machine learning.  In the middle, he breaks apart different areas of machine learning into ‘5 tribes’ and their chosen algorithms.  I really enjoyed this section.  I thought the histories and perspectives he gave on the different algorithms were very interesting.  I definitely felt I learned a lot even though I’m familiar with these techniques because his approach is more humanistic than mathematical.  The last parts are him putting the pieces together into his own algorithm and recapping.  The beginning and the end weren’t impressive to me.  I felt he was repetitive in a lot of parts.  Overall if you have the time, I recommend this book, especially the chapters for each of the tribes and their algorithms.
